Salerno station sits 800 meters uphill from the ferry terminal, a 12-minute walk or a 6-minute bus ride on CSTP route 1. Ferry schedules determine whether the rail-sea connection works as a day trip. Morning departures from Salerno leave hourly between 08:30 and 11:00 from April through October, dropping to three daily runs in winter. The crossing to Positano takes 70 minutes, Amalfi 40 minutes. Return ferries leave Amalfi between 16:00 and 18:30 in peak season. Missing the last boat forces an overnight stay or a €120-plus taxi ride back to Salerno along the winding coast road. The rail-ferry route costs €35 to €50 per person for a round trip depending on train class and season, compared to €180 to €250 for private car services that collect passengers at Rome hotels. Ferry tickets are sold at Salerno's Molo Manfredi terminal and cannot be purchased in advance for most routes, which creates a risk of sold-out crossings on summer weekends. The alternative bus route from Salerno to Amalfi follows the cliff road for 75 minutes but runs infrequently and does not serve Positano. This transit model works for travelers willing to build their day around fixed departure windows and accept that weather conditions occasionally suspend ferry service.
